Friktion
Definition
The cumulative effect of countless small difficulties that make even the simplest military action harder than expected. Friction is the distinction between war on paper and real war. It includes weather, fatigue, miscommunication, broken equipment, and the fog of uncertainty. Only the commander who has seen war understands how friction degrades plans; the remedy is not a better plan but habituation and iron will.
