BLUF

Ceasefire/MoU is dead and the strait is a shooting gallery. Iran has struck 7 commercial vessels since the truce collapsed ~July 7–8; CENTCOM is on its ~9th–10th consecutive night of strikes (through July 20) aimed at restoring commercial access. Transits are a fraction of baseline, war-risk cover is 12–40x pre-war, and Qatar LNG exports effectively halted. Escalation is spilling onto GCC soil (Qatar, Kuwait).

Strait Status & Shipping

  • AIS-visible crossings (24h window, July 19): 7 outbound / 4 inbound — far below pre-conflict baseline.
  • Tanker/LNG transits hit lowest daily level since June 28: 10 ships Thu vs 14 Wed, 22 Mon.
  • Tanker Mombasa B struck July 14 by Iranian cruise missile in the southern lane — 1 crew killed. Separate US enforcement strike disabled an 8th vessel for defying the reinstated blockade on Iranian ports.
  • IRGC threat standing: “not a single drop of oil or gas will be exported from the region” while US operations continue.
  • CENTCOM ran a 3-hour strike wave July 20 — command hubs, IADS, coastal surveillance, missile/drone launch sites, and comms nets used to coordinate attacks on merchant shipping. Reporting varies between 9th and 10th consecutive night.
  • US posture is coordination, not convoy: Project Freedom model — warships “in the vicinity,” safe-lane guidance (incl. mine-free lanes) rather than direct escorts. Two US-flagged vessels transited successfully under this scheme.
  • US blockading Iranian ports; Trump declared the ceasefire “over,” says the US will “keep the Strait” and should be paid for securing it.
  • Regional spillover: Qatar intercepted Iranian air attacks a second time (~July 16, booms over Doha); Kuwait desalination/power plant struck July 17.

Energy Markets

  • Brent +4.6% to **70s floor through Aug–Sep with spike risk.
  • VLCC AG→China freight +24% in a day to 423,736/day (all-time high).
  • War-risk premiums now 3–10% of hull value vs 0.25% pre-war → 100M tanker; some insurers dropping cover entirely.
  • Asia spot LNG $20.2/MMBtu (+10% w/w); Qatar LNG flow through the strait halted ~3 days. Europe heating-season exposure building.
  • Fuel shortages reported in parts of Asia (2026 Iran war fuel crisis).

Logistics & Supply Chain

  • Container diversions +360% since the strait was declared closed (218 → ~1,010 shipments/day, per project44).
  • MSC structurally de-risking from Jebel Ali; building a sea-land corridor bypassing the chokepoint. DP World running land corridors; claims Jebel Ali “fully operational” but inbound throughput has cratered.
  • Diverted volumes absorbing into Khorfakkan, Sohar, Hambantota, Mundra, Navi Mumbai; Gulf booking freezes raising congestion risk at global hubs. Cape reroutes spiking freight up to 50%.

Watchpoints

  1. Does the US shift from coordination to true convoy escorts (Operation Epic Escort option) after continued vessel strikes?
  2. GCC infrastructure attacks (Kuwait water/power, Qatar air defense) — trigger for broader Gulf state entry into the war?
  3. Qatari LNG restart timing — every week of halt tightens Europe’s winter balance.
  4. Insurance market: full withdrawal of war-risk cover would close the strait commercially regardless of military outcome.
  5. Iranian capacity degradation — do strikes actually reduce anti-ship attack tempo this week?
