Hormuz Watch — 2026-08-03
Bottom line: Two deals, one strait. Trump says US-Iran negotiations start this afternoon and a deal is “imminent” — Hormuz opening plus denuclearization. Tehran (Esmail Baghaei) flatly denies any direct US track and says the only live negotiation is with Oman over a temporary safe route — which Abbas Araghchi now calls “final stages,” a reversal from Friday’s rejection. The market traded Trump’s version (Brent −4.7% overnight to ~$84) while the water told Iran’s: the LNG carrier GasLog Shanghai disabled, two tankers dead in the southern corridor, and the blockade count still climbing. De-risking is priced; de-escalation is not observed.
Last 24–48h
- Trump: talks with Iran begin Monday afternoon; “the deal is imminent, having to do with the Hormuz Strait, and… ultimately the denuclearization of Iran.” Sunday’s shelved strike stays shelved — he says Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and Iran asked him to hold off (ABC, CNBC, The Hill).
- Tehran’s counter-frame: foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei — “no immediate plan” for US talks; only track is Oman. Abbas Araghchi: Oman negotiations on the strait are in their “final stages” (Al Jazeera, Iran International). That flips Friday’s reported rejection of Oman’s joint-management plan — either the rejection was posturing, or “final stages” is; both can’t hold.
- The two frameworks are incompatible on the core term: Trump’s “immediate and total opening” vs. Iran’s Oman-mediated temporary safe route — a fee-and-permission corridor by another name. Whoever’s version surfaces in writing first sets the anchor.
- Iran kept shooting through the diplomacy: drones at Kuwait intercepted Aug 1 (second week running), and Maj. Gen. Ali Abdollahi warned Gulf hosts of US bases they “will burn in the fires of war.” State Dept issued a region-wide warning to US citizens (CNN).
- IRGC claims its new air-defense system downed another US MQ-9 over the strait area (Iranian state media; unconfirmed, part of a June–July pattern of claimed Reaper kills).
Shipping & insurance
- The southern corridor got hit. GasLog Shanghai (Bermuda flag, Qatari LNG ex-Ras Laffan) struck Jul 31 ~23:30Z, 11nm NE of Oman on the Omani coastal route — portside engine room, fire out, all power lost, vessel disabled (Seatrade, Maritime Executive). Two tankers struck and disabled on the same southern route overnight into Aug 1; four more turned back after warnings. A Liberian-flag tanker reported a missile/drone impact 5m off its starboard — the near-miss that didn’t make headlines.
- Read: Iran is firing into the exact corridor it’s supposedly negotiating with Oman — the US-guided route Tehran “does not recognize.” Second GasLog hull hit in three days (Salem at Damietta, now Shanghai). Qatari LNG is now being hit while Qatar lobbies Trump for diplomacy — and Qatari LNG has no pipeline bypass.
- CENTCOM blockade count: 35 vessels redirected (20 → 24 → 35 over three days) — enforcement accelerating straight through the “deal” weekend.
- Congestion building: ~424 vessels holding position off-berth per AIS (+135 vs 3 days ago); other reporting puts 550+ waiting on both sides. ~70 tankers running dark in the strait core (straits.live).
- War-risk: 7.5–10% of hull unchanged, ~8× pre-crisis, VLCC transit ≈ $2.5M. Six P&I clubs have pulled cover: Gard, Skuld, North Standard, London P&I Club, American Club, Steamship Mutual. Monday prints post-”deal” are the tell to watch.
- Houthis denied plans to impose Red Sea transit fees (gCaptain/Reuters) — noteworthy because the denial confirms the fee model is now the region’s reference framework.
- PortWatch baseline unchanged: last published day (Jul 23) 10 transits vs ~88 normal — 11% throughput. Cape reroute entrenched: all top-9 container lines still diverted, ~$750–1,200/TEU surcharges.
Energy markets & alternative routes
- Brent crude (Oct, now front month) **−4.6–4.8% to 90.12.
- Asymmetry has flipped since Saturday: downside (confirmed deal) is now largely priced; upside tail (talks collapse + the shelved “harshest” energy-infrastructure strike executes) is not. Fastest re-price trigger: Tehran contradicting “imminent” on the record.
- The physical tape argues against the paper tape: GasLog Shanghai proves LNG transits are being targeted, and Qatari volumes can’t reroute. Any repeat while talks run should put a floor under the curve regardless of headlines.
- Macro spillover arriving: UK forecasters warn of recession if Hormuz stays closed into 2027 (Independent/Business Times) — first G7 recession call explicitly pinned to the strait.
- Prediction markets barely believe the weekend: normal traffic by Aug 31 just 13% (Polymarket), by end-Sept 24%, by year-end 59%. straits.live models 2% by Aug 15. The market that trades outcomes, not headlines, moved a point or two.
- Iranian rial: 190,300 toman/USD, −1.4% — Tehran’s street is pricing modest relief, not victory.
Naval / military
- Posture: strike package shelved, not scrapped — Israel and Iran both remain on full alert (WaPo). CENTCOM blockade ops continue uninterrupted; escorted/guided transits on the southern corridor continue despite the Jul 31–Aug 1 hits.
- The Gulf trio’s weekend lobbying (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar) marks a structural shift: Riyadh went from co-belligerent (Jul 29 Iraq strikes) back to broker inside 96 hours. MBS’s Saturday call likely bought Tehran the week.
- Kuwait again the pressure-release target — drones intercepted Aug 1, no damage. Iran keeps calibrating: hit GCC soil, kill no one, message delivered.
- Unchanged and still gating everything: mines in/around the TSS, de-mining never started, US Fifth Fleet MCM gap. Whatever gets signed today, physical reopening remains weeks, not hours.
- Chokepoint spread: Bab al-Mandeb partial recovery holding; Suez Canal/Med premium zone post-Damietta still forming. All three chokepoints remain live risk zones.
Watch next
- Does anyone show up this afternoon? Trump says talks start today; Iran says there are none. If no meeting materializes by tonight DC time, “imminent” was leverage-speak and the strike window reopens fast.
- Oman channel paper. “Final stages” of a temporary safe route ≠ “total opening.” Watch Fars/IRNA for the words fees, permission, corridor — any of them means Iran’s war objective survived the weekend.
- Southern-corridor attribution. If the GasLog Shanghai/tanker strikes get pinned on IRGC units (not “unknown projectiles”), Trump’s hold-off becomes untenable with the package pre-loaded.
- War-risk prints today — first post-”deal” quotes. Underwriters re-pricing below 7.5% would be the first real vote of confidence; they watch hulls, not press conferences.
- Calendar compression: June MoU 60-day window + General License X mid-August, Senate recess Aug 10. Two weeks to deal-or-strike, now with a UK recession call attached.
- De-mining start — still the only signal that counts.
