Hormuz Watch — 2026-08-11

Situation Summary

Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed (~Day 170). Transits 27 Jul–2 Aug: 84, up from 45 prior week but a fraction of the normal ~73/day. Non-Iranian gas carrier and containership transits resumed after multi-week pauses. Diplomatic track active but hardening on both sides.

Diplomacy

  • Trump adds compensation condition (Aug 10): US now seeks compensation from Iran “for past misdeeds” as a talks precondition; says Washington is “low-keying” negotiations. New friction point on top of Iran’s demand that the US lift its naval blockade first.
  • Iran–Oman route agreement (Aug 7): Tehran says a managed-shipping route deal with Muscat is reached — but insufficient alone to reopen; conditional on US concessions incl. compensation to Iran.
  • Iran’s toll regime: proposed ban on US/Israeli vessels, fees up to 7% of cargo value for others, 20% cargo fine for violations.
  • Qatar mediating in parallel; focus on a short-term arrangement after the Jun 17 US–Iran MOU collapsed in July.

Kinetic / Naval

  • ADNOC tanker missile strike (Aug 8): Iranian missile hit an ADNOC tanker in the strait — 16th shipping attack since the war began; no casualties. UAE/GCC condemned as violation of UNSC freedom-of-navigation resolution. ADNOC: 15 vessels hit to date (3 that week), 1 crew killed, 20 injured cumulative.
  • Houthis hit Jazan Refinery: claimed attack on the Saudi refinery — southern-flank escalation risk to Red Sea insurance zones.
  • Qatari LNG carrier disabled (late Jul–Aug 2): Bermuda-flagged carrier lost propulsion after projectile strike in engine room; another Qatar-flagged LNG carrier stranded Jul 31 despite US Fifth Fleet escort. US aerial campaign (since Mar 19) and naval blockade (since Apr 13) continue.

Energy Markets

  • **Brent Crude 83–$91 range intraweek on deal uncertainty + weekend attacks.
  • LNG: Hormuz disruption has cut Qatar/UAE LNG supply by >300M m³/day; strait normally carries ~20% of global LNG, ~25% of seaborne oil.
  • EIA raised price outlook citing the crisis.

Shipping / Logistics

  • War-risk cover suspended or sharply repriced for Hormuz/Gulf transits; JWC widened Red Sea high-risk zone (Jul 29) — Saudi Red Sea port calls now pricier too.
  • Jebel Ali congestion normalized since the Mar–May crunch; intra-Gulf cargo rerouting via Mundra/Nhava Sheva + feeder/truck, and Oman–UAE land-bridge trucking.
  • Fujairah bypass: ADCOP pipeline moving crude outside the strait; second pipeline under construction to double bypass capacity.

Watch Items

  1. US response to Iran’s compensation demand vs. Trump’s counter-demand — talks could stall into stalemate.
  2. Whether the Iran–Oman route deal produces any actual managed transits this week.
  3. Further attacks on UAE/Qatari tonnage — each strike undercuts the diplomatic track and resets insurance.
  4. Houthi tempo against Saudi targets — contagion into Red Sea/Bab el-Mandeb pricing.
  5. Fujairah pipeline #2 progress — structural reducer of Hormuz leverage.
