Hormuz Watch — Saturday 2026-08-22
BLUF
Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed to commercial traffic (day ~175 of crisis). Single-digit commodity transits vs ~100/day pre-war. Iran escalating against UAE/ADNOC-linked shipping; diplomacy stalled after collapse of the June 17 US–Iran transit MOU. No near-term reopening path visible.
Incidents (last 7 days)
- Aug 21 (Fri night): ADNOC-affiliated vessel attacked while transiting the strait — latest in a campaign; ~19 ADNOC-linked vessels targeted to date.
- Aug 17–21: IRGC seized a UAE-owned tanker near Qeshm Island — first confirmed seizure since two container ships taken June 22. Tehran cites “violations of Iran’s rules” for the strait.
- Iran forced a large Chinese oil tanker to abort its southern-corridor transit — notable: Beijing-linked traffic no longer exempt.
Naval / military ops
- US Navy blockade of Iranian ports remains in effect — no ships to/from any Iranian port, inside or outside the strait.
- US strikes on Iranian targets continue in response to ship attacks (pattern since three ships hit July 7).
- Operation Project Freedom (US escort mission, launched May 4, paused May 5): still no relaunched escort mission despite signaled readiness — thin traffic undercuts the case.
- IRGC posture unchanged: passage “forbidden,” boardings, sea mines laid in the strait.
Traffic data
- 73 transits Aug 10–16, down from 91 prior week (Lloyd’s List Intelligence).
- Latest monitored day: <10 commodity ship transits; one source logged a single transit on Aug 16.
Markets & insurance
- Brent crude 86.30 (-0.55%) Aug 21 — second straight weekly gain; supply-risk premium intact.
- Tanker rates: VLCC/suezmax spot rates surging on Hormuz-exposed trades; ~4x the 5-yr average (140/mt).
- War-risk cover for a 270k-dwt tanker: ~$21M per voyage.
Bypass / supply-chain workarounds
- Saudi Arabia East-West Pipeline at full 7 mb/d; ~5 mb/d crude exports via Yanbu + 700–900 kb/d products.
- UAE building a second pipeline to double Hormuz-bypass export capacity.
- Iran’s Goreh-Jask pipeline (1 mb/d design) still throttled — sanctions + unfinished terminal; historically <70 kb/d actual.
- Qatar LNG: no fresh reporting today — remains the critical unhedged exposure (no bypass exists). Watch item.
Assessment
Iran’s shift to systematically targeting ADNOC assets and seizing UAE tonnage reads as pressure on Abu Dhabi to break with Washington’s blockade coalition — while the Chinese-tanker turn-back signals Tehran will spend leverage even against nominal partners. With the strait as Iran’s core negotiating chip and both capitals hardening publicly, expect continued attrition warfare on shipping rather than reopening. Escort operations stay shelved while traffic is this thin; insurers, not navies, are setting effective throughput.
Watch items
- Any relaunch of Operation Project Freedom escorts or coalition equivalent.
- UAE response to Qeshm seizure — retaliation vs quiet accommodation.
- Qatari LNG force majeure risk; winter contracting season approaching.
- Oman–Iran channel (last active April) reviving as mediation track.
- Chinese diplomatic reaction to forced tanker turn-back.
