Space Development Agency

The Space Development Agency builds the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, a large constellation of small satellites in low Earth orbit delivered in two-year tranches. Its Transport Layer moves data and its Tracking Layer detects and tracks missiles, including hypersonic threats that legacy geostationary systems handle poorly. Founded in 2019 and folded into the Space Force in 2022, SDA is the department’s principal experiment in buying space capability on a fixed cadence rather than a program schedule.
