The Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering is the Defense Department’s chief technology officer. The office was created in 2018 when the old acquisition, technology and logistics undersecretariat was split in two, leaving R&E with science and technology, prototyping, experimentation, and the job of moving new technology into fielded programs. DARPA is among its components.
