SOCOM Components and Theater Commands

USSOCOM is unusual among combatant commands: it has service-like authorities, including its own acquisition executive and its own budget line. It organizes below itself in two directions at once. Service components man, train, and equip special operations forces from each military department. Theater special operations commands employ those forces under the geographic combatant commanders.

Service components

Each military department provides a special operations component. These own the force generation: recruiting, selection, training, and equipping.

• USASOC — Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg. The largest component, including Special Forces groups, Rangers, and Army special operations aviation.
• NAVSPECWARCOM — Naval Special Warfare Command, Coronado. SEAL teams and special warfare combatant-craft crewmen.
• AFSOC — Air Force Special Operations Command, Hurlburt Field. Fixed and rotary wing special operations aviation, including the AC-130 gunship fleet.
• MARSOC — Marine Forces Special Operations Command, Camp Lejeune. Marine Raiders.
• JSOC — Joint Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg. A joint headquarters rather than a service component.

Theater special operations commands

Each geographic combatant command has a subordinate TSOC that commands special operations forces in its area of responsibility. This is where the employment happens.

Why the split matters

For anyone selling into special operations, the distinction determines who buys. Components hold the programmatic relationships and feed requirements to USSOCOM acquisition through its program executive offices. Theater commands hold the operational problem and can generate urgent needs that move faster than the normal cycle. A capability that solves a theater problem still has to find a component or a program office to own it.
