US Space Force

The United States Space Force is the sixth armed service, established in December 2019 within the Department of the Air Force. It organizes, trains, and equips forces to protect American and allied interests in space and to provide space capability to the joint force, operating through field commands for operations, acquisition, and training. It is the smallest service by personnel and one of the most acquisition-heavy by budget share.

The controlling statutory basis is 10 U.S.C. § 9081, which establishes the Space Force as an armed force within the Department of the Air Force, so it is not a fourth military department and the Secretary of the Air Force under 10 U.S.C. § 9013 remains its civilian head, a placement explained at Title_10_Structure.
