Multi-Domain Effects Battalion
The MDEB is the half of a Multi_Domain_Task_Force that does not shoot. It finds targets, characterizes them, holds the network together, and delivers the effects that do not involve explosives: space, cyber, electronic warfare, and information. It exists because the Army concluded that a long-range missile is worthless without an organic ability to see past the horizon, and that asking the joint force for that picture takes longer than the target lives.

Composition
The Army information paper reproduced in CRS IF11797 shows the MDEB as a headquarters and headquarters company plus military intelligence, extended range sensing, and information dominance elements. Public writing by MDEB officers describes the battalion in five functional companies:

Terminology varies across sources. The CRS chart labels the sensing element ERSE and the information element ID for Information Dominance. Unit-level writing uses Extended Range Sensing and Effects and Information Defense. The functions are the same.
The battalion’s former designation was I2CEWS, for Intelligence, Information, Cyber, Electronic Warfare and Space. That acronym is the clearest statement of what the unit is: five capability areas that used to be requested from national and joint agencies, packaged into one deployable battalion.
The Five Non-Kinetic Capabilities
Electronic warfare
Electronic warfare is both a sensor and a weapon in the MDEB. As a sensor it is signals intelligence, and locating an adversary’s radars, data links, and command nodes by their emissions is frequently the cheapest way to find a mobile target that is otherwise well concealed. As a weapon it is electronic attack against those same emitters, degrading the adversary’s ability to see and to coordinate.
The program of record at this echelon is the Terrestrial Layer System Echelons Above Brigade, TLS-EAB, an extended-range terrestrial sensing, collection, and electronic attack system that converges signals intelligence, electronic warfare, and cyber effects on one platform. It supports situational understanding, command post survivability, critical asset protection, and the delivery of both lethal and non-lethal effects. Lockheed_Martin is the prime. Limited production began in late 2024, which let the Army start fielding TLS-EAB to the MDTF.
Cyber
The battalion’s organic cyber capability is primarily defensive, resident in the information dominance company alongside its electromagnetic attack platoons. Defensive cyber matters disproportionately here because the task force’s targeting network is the highest-value cyber target in the theater. Denying that network stops a shot. Corrupting it produces a shot at the wrong coordinates, which is worse. Offensive cyber effects at scale are requested through ARCYBER and joint channels rather than generated inside the battalion.
Space
Space is the enabling layer under everything else. Every long-range shot the task force takes depends on space for position, navigation, and timing, for the satellite communications that carry targeting data forward, and often for the overhead collection that found the target at all. The space company provides space control in both directions: assuring friendly access to those services in a contested environment, and denying the adversary the space-enabled targeting that makes his own anti-ship missiles work.
The March 2024 Military Review treatment of the battalion makes the point plainly, that employing MDTF long-range fires against targets on land or at sea requires understanding how space enables their success. In an AD fight, the side that keeps its space services is the side whose missiles arrive.
Information
Information operations shape perception, the adversary’s and the local population’s. In competition below the threshold of armed conflict, which is where an MDTF spends most of its existence, this is often the battalion’s most active line of effort. In conflict it is used to complicate an opponent’s decision cycle and to insulate friendly and partner audiences from manipulation.
Intelligence
Intelligence is the connective tissue. The military intelligence company runs analysis and target development, and it is the customer for everything the ERSE company collects, everything the electronic warfare systems intercept, and everything national and joint sensors push into the theater. Its product is the target folder the Long_Range_Fires_Battalion shoots against.
The Deep Sensing Layer
The reason the MDEB is more than an intelligence staff section is that it owns collection assets, and those assets are unusual for an Army battalion.
Long-endurance unmanned aircraft. The ERSE company flies ultra-long-endurance, solar-powered unmanned aircraft built for long-range deep sensing rather than for supporting a maneuver brigade. During Exercise Static Focus 3, the Army’s first battalion-level all-domain home-station training event, held March 3 to 14, 2025 at Yakima Training Center, Washington, the 1st MDEB logged more than one hundred hours of unmanned flights in multiple configurations, including multi-aircraft autonomous operation. Soldiers reported assembling and launching the modular K1000 system in about two days. The battalion commander, Lt. Col. Joseph Mroszczyk, described it as the unit’s first real exercise integrating government-owned long-endurance aircraft designed specifically for long-range deep sensing. The event was run alongside Project_Convergence Capstone 5.
High-altitude balloons. The ERSE company also fields a high-altitude balloon platoon. Balloons carry sensors for surveillance, detection, and targeting above weather and above most tactical air defense envelopes, and they extend the network as well as the sensor grid. The 1st MDEB has evaluated multiple commercial vendors in the role.
TITAN. The Tactical Intelligence Targeting Access Node is the ground station that turns collection into targets. TITAN ingests space, high-altitude, aerial, and terrestrial sensor data and applies artificial intelligence and machine learning to produce targetable tracks fast enough to matter for a long-range shot. Palantir is the prime, with World_Wide_Technology, and the effort drew in Northrop_Grumman, Anduril, and L3Harris among others. The Army awarded roughly $178 million in March 2024 for ten systems, and delivered the first to the 1st_MDTF by April 2025. TITAN is the single most important non-kinetic system in the formation because it is the interface between sensing and shooting. See Sensor_to_Shooter.
What It Actually Does
It replaces the request for national collection with organic collection. Space imagery, signals intelligence, and cyber effects historically flowed to a theater from national and joint agencies on their own timelines. Putting a space company and an information company inside a deployable battalion means a colonel can task them. That is the single largest doctrinal change the MDTF represents, larger than the missiles.
It is theater reconnaissance. Army writing has explicitly framed the MDEB as the successor to the cavalry’s screening and reconnaissance function, scaled from the brigade’s frontage to a theater’s. The ERSE company’s high-altitude balloons, which loiter above weather and above most air defense engagement envelopes, are the persistent stare that a division cavalry squadron never had.
It protects the task force’s signature. A Long_Range_Fires_Battalion that emits is a targeted battalion. The MDEB’s information defense and signal companies own the problem of keeping a dispersed formation connected without making it findable, which is the practical constraint on how far MDTF batteries can disperse.
It exports capability to partners. The 1st MDEB has run an Army High-Altitude Basics Course for partner units, one example of the MDTF’s role as the vehicle by which theater armies push multi-domain capability into allied formations during exercises.
Why It Matters
The MDEB is the acquisition surface of the MDTF. The fires battalion buys from two or three large missile programs. The effects battalion buys high-altitude platforms, expeditionary electronic warfare, tactical space payloads, software-defined radios, edge compute, and target-development software. It is a wider, faster-turning, more competitive market and it is where non-traditional vendors get into an MDTF.
Its output is the constraint on the whole formation. Dark_Eagle and Typhon can reach farther than the Army can reliably see and decide. It is the piece most likely to be copied downward. Army writing on multi-domain effects platoons at brigade level treats the MDEB as the parent design. If that migration continues, MDEB company-level equipment sets become the template for a much larger buy.
Where It Sits in the Kill Chain
The MDEB owns find, fix, and track, and it delivers non-kinetic engagement of its own. The Long_Range_Fires_Battalion owns the kinetic engage with HIMARS, Typhon, and Dark_Eagle. Assessment is shared. The hardest case is a moving ship, where a Typhon SM-6 shot or a Precision_Strike_Missile Increment 2 shot only closes if track custody is held continuously from detection through terminal handover. That requirement, more than any missile characteristic, is why the sensing battalion and the firing battalion sit under the same colonel.
