4th Multi-Domain Task Force
The 4th MDTF is the third Pacific task force, planned for Fort_Carson, Colorado, and slated to be the operating force under a proposed Multi-Domain_Command_Japan. It has not activated. Its full operational capability date is FY2027, which makes it the next test of whether the Army can build an MDTF on schedule now that the missiles it depends on are in low-rate production rather than prototype.

Status
CRS reports the 4th MDTF as planned for stationing at Fort_Carson, Colorado, focused on the Indo-Pacific theater, and to be fully operational by FY2027. As of August 2026 no activation has been publicly announced. FY2027 begins October 1, 2026, so the activation window is immediate.
The stationing decision is the odd one in the set. Every other MDTF sits either in its theater or on the west coast. Fort_Carson is an interior installation in Colorado, roughly as far from the first island chain as the continental United States allows. The Army has not published a public rationale, but the choice is consistent with a formation intended to be flown forward on demand rather than forward-stationed, and with Fort_Carson’s existing air defense and fires infrastructure.
Relationship to Multi-Domain Command-Japan
In June 2025, USARPAC commander Gen. Ronald_P_Clark described a plan for two two-star Multi-Domain Commands in the Pacific. One, Multi-Domain_Command_Pacific, would combine the 7th_Infantry_Division headquarters with a multi-domain task force at Joint_Base_Lewis-McChord. That command activated June 18, 2026. The other, Multi-Domain_Command_Japan, would combine US_Army_Japan’s headquarters at Camp_Zama with the 4th MDTF.
Clark’s stated reason for elevating these headquarters to two-star level was authorities: the space, cyber, and long-range fires permissions an MDTF needs to exercise are in many cases held above colonel level, and the staff capacity required to plan and synchronize theater effects exceeds what a brigade-equivalent headquarters carries. No activation date for Multi-Domain_Command_Japan has been publicly announced.
Expected Structure
The 4th MDTF has no published table of organization. The generic MDTF template implies a headquarters battery, a Multi_Domain_Effects_Battalion, a Long_Range_Fires_Battalion with HIMARS, Typhon, and Dark_Eagle batteries, an Indirect_Fire_Protection_Capability_Battalion, and a Brigade_Support_Battalion.
One concrete signal exists in the air defense plan. CRS lists 5-5 ADA at Fort_Carson for IFPC_Increment_2 fielding in FY2029, without naming a parent MDTF. That is the only Fort_Carson IFPC battalion in the nine-battalion fielding sequence and the natural candidate for the 4th MDTF’s air and missile defense element.
Why It Matters
FY2027 is the schedule test. The first three MDTFs were built while Dark_Eagle and Typhon were prototypes and the Army could absorb equipping delays by calling units experimental. The 4th has to be manned and equipped against production deliveries. Whether it reaches FOC on time is a direct readout on Long_Range_Precision_Fires production rates.
A Japan-based two-star command would change alliance politics, not just wiring diagrams. US_Army_Japan has historically been an administrative and base-support headquarters. Turning it into an operational multi-domain command with an assigned fires formation gives the Army a warfighting headquarters inside the first island chain and pairs it with Japan’s own standing joint command reforms.
Watch for restationing. Fort_Carson is a placeholder that predates both the Japan command concept and the Army_Transformation_Initiative corps realignment. If the operational headquarters ends up at Camp_Zama, the case for keeping the operating force in Colorado weakens.
