3rd Multi-Domain Task Force
The 3rd MDTF is the task force that actually took the missiles forward. It put Dark_Eagle on the ground in Australia in July 2025 and Typhon on the ground in Japan in September 2025, and in December 2025 it activated the Army’s first fully designated Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon battery. Headquartered in Hawaii with its fires at Joint_Base_Lewis-McChord, it is the USARPAC formation whose deployments China responds to by name.

History
The Army activated the 3rd MDTF at Schofield_Barracks, Hawaii, in September 2022 as the second Indo-Pacific task force and the third overall. It supports USARPAC as a land component contribution to USINDOPACOM. Its headquarters is reported at Fort Shafter, the USARPAC headquarters installation, where its June 18, 2025 change of command was held on Palm Circle. Col. Wade_A_Germann took the colors from Brig. Gen. Michael_D_Rose.
Under the April 2024 build plan, the 3rd MDTF was to be headquartered in Hawaii with its Multi_Domain_Effects_Battalion there and its IFPC battalion, Brigade_Support_Battalion, and Long_Range_Fires_Battalion stationed at Joint_Base_Lewis-McChord, reaching full operational capability in FY2026. That split places the task force’s shooters on the same installation as the former 1st_MDTF’s, which concentrates the Army’s entire western-Pacific long-range fires enterprise in one Washington State motor pool.
Structure
- Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, Hawaii
- 3d Multi_Domain_Effects_Battalion, the sensing, space, cyber, electronic warfare, and information element. Its space capability expanded into space control tasks at Cobra_Gold 2026.
- 1st_Battalion_17th_Field_Artillery, the Long_Range_Fires_Battalion at Joint_Base_Lewis-McChord, commanded by Lt. Col. Jeffrey_M_Orban. Bravo Battery, activated December 12, 2025, is the Army’s first battery fully designated to operate Dark_Eagle.
- 3rd IFPC Battalion, planned. CRS lists it for IFPC_Increment_2 fielding at Joint_Base_Lewis-McChord in FY2029.
- Task Force Sustainment Battalion, forming, built out from the 560th Brigade Support Company.
Operational Record
Dark Eagle to Australia, July 2025. The 3rd MDTF conducted the first operational deployment of the Dark_Eagle Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon system, moving it to Australia for Talisman_Sabre. The deployment demonstrated that the system could be flown, staged, and emplaced in a forward theater, which was the open question about the program.
Typhon to Japan, September 2025. On September 15, 2025 the Army confirmed the first deployment of a Typhon Mid-Range Capability battery to Japan, operated by the 3rd MDTF and delivered to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni during the opening phase of Resolute_Dragon 25. A Typhon battery consists of four launchers, a trailer-mounted mobile command post, and supporting vehicles, and fires Tomahawk and SM-6. From Iwakuni, Tomahawk range covers the East China Sea and portions of the Chinese coast, which is why the deployment produced immediate protests from Beijing and Moscow.
First Dark Eagle battery activation, December 2025. Bravo Battery, 1st_Battalion_17th_Field_Artillery, activated at Joint_Base_Lewis-McChord on December 12, 2025 with USINDOPACOM commander Adm. Samuel_Paparo present. Lt. Gen. Frank_Lozano, who oversees the Army’s hypersonics portfolio, said in March 2026 that the battery was within weeks of receiving its first operational rounds and reaching full equipping.
Space control at Cobra Gold 2026. The task force expanded its role in the Thailand-hosted Cobra_Gold exercise to include space control tasks, the clearest public example of an MDTF exercising a capability that until recently sat at national level.
Why It Matters
This is the unit that converts hypersonics program milestones into deterrence facts. Dark_Eagle spent years as a test article. The 3rd MDTF is where it becomes a fielded battery with a crew, a motor pool, and a deployment history. Program schedule slips now show up as gaps in this unit’s readiness rather than as line items.
Its deployments are the pressure test of first-island-chain access politics. Every forward emplacement of Typhon or Dark_Eagle requires a host nation to accept a U.S. intermediate-range missile on its territory and absorb the Chinese diplomatic response. Japan accepted in 2025. The Philippines accepted in 2024 through the 1st_MDTF. Which countries accept next is the practical limit on Long_Range_Precision_Fires employment in the theater.
Concentration at Joint Base Lewis-McChord is a vulnerability and a logistics fact. Two MDTF fires battalions, an IFPC battalion, and I_Corps all sit at the same installation roughly 5,000 miles from the fight. Getting them forward under contested conditions is the Dispersal_Sustainment_Paradox in its most concrete form.
