1st Multi-Domain Task Force

The 1st MDTF is the prototype. Stood up at Joint_Base_Lewis-McChord in 2017 as a pilot before anyone had written the doctrine, it became the unit that proved the concept: it fielded the Army’s first Dark_Eagle hardware, flew the first Typhon launcher into the Philippines, and worked out what a colonel with theater-level space and cyber authorities can actually do. On June 18, 2026 it merged with the 7th_Infantry_Division to form Multi-Domain_Command_Pacific, which means the concept succeeded well enough that the Army retired the nameplate.

History

The Army activated the 1st MDTF at Joint_Base_Lewis-McChord in 2017 as a pilot formation, years before the Multi_Domain_Operations concept was formalized in doctrine or the Chief of Staff’s March 2021 paper defined what an MDTF was supposed to be. It was aligned to USARPAC from the start and spent its early years as an experimentation unit inside a live theater, participating in Pacific exercise programs while the Army worked out the table of organization.

Under the April 2024 build plan reported by Defense News, the 1st MDTF was the first task force scheduled to reach full structure, with a Multi_Domain_Effects_Battalion, an IFPC battalion, a Brigade_Support_Battalion, and a Long_Range_Fires_Battalion all in place by FY2024.

Structure

As constituted before the 2026 merger:

  • Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion
  • 1st Multi_Domain_Effects_Battalion, the sensing, targeting, space, cyber, electronic warfare, and information element. Its Extended Range Sensing and Effects company operates High_Altitude_Balloon platforms for ISR, communications extension, and intelligence preparation of the battlefield, and the battalion has run an Army High-Altitude Basics Course for partner units.
  • 5th_Battalion_3rd_Field_Artillery, the Long_Range_Fires_Battalion and the Army’s first. Bravo Battery was the first unit to receive and operate Dark_Eagle Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon ground equipment, ahead of the first fully designated LRHW battery activated under the 3rd_MDTF in December 2025. Delta Battery fields the Typhon Mid-Range Capability launcher, photographed at Joint_Base_Lewis-McChord on January 10, 2024, and USARPAC subsequently announced activation of a second MRC battery in the battalion. The battalion also fields HIMARS.
  • 1st Battalion, 51st Air Defense Artillery Regiment, the air and missile defense element. CRS lists 1-51 ADA at Joint_Base_Lewis-McChord as first in the Army’s IFPC_Increment_2 fielding sequence, scheduled for FY2026.
  • 1163rd Task Force Sustainment Battalion, the sustainment element, filling the role the generic MDTF template labels Brigade_Support_Battalion.

Operational Record

Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon. The 1st MDTF’s fires battalion was the Army’s first unit to receive Dark_Eagle ground equipment and the first to move the system operationally. In a February 2023 exercise the battalion deployed the LRHW system more than 3,100 miles from Joint_Base_Lewis-McChord. In July 2024 its Bravo Battery held a force package in the field for more than 72 hours during the Resolute Hunter exercise, demonstrating the LRHW digital Kill_Chain with joint partners.

Typhon to the Philippines. In April 2024 the 1st MDTF flew a Typhon Mid-Range Capability launcher roughly 8,000 miles aboard a C-17 to northern Luzon for exercise Salaknib. The system stayed on Luzon afterward, becoming the first persistent U.S. ground-based intermediate-range missile presence in the first island chain since the INF_Treaty and a standing point of friction with Beijing.

Merger into Multi-Domain Command-Pacific

On May 15, 2026 the Army announced that the 7th_Infantry_Division and the 1st MDTF, both at Joint_Base_Lewis-McChord, would merge into a two-star headquarters called Multi-Domain_Command_Pacific. Lt. Gen. Matthew_McFarlane, commanding general of I_Corps, said soldiers assigned to the 1st MDTF would adopt the 7th ID patch during the transition. The activation ceremony took place at Joint_Base_Lewis-McChord on June 18, 2026.

The resulting command runs roughly 12,000 soldiers under Maj. Gen. Bernard_Harrington: a division headquarters, two Stryker brigades, a combat aviation brigade, and the former task force’s four battalions. USARPAC commander Gen. Ronald_P_Clark framed it as a formation that “allows us to see, sense, make sense, affect, protect, and sustain a force forward in the Pacific region.” It is the Army’s first two-star command combining conventional ground maneuver with organic space, cyber, electronic warfare, intelligence, and long-range fires.

Why It Matters

Every fielding milestone for the Army’s two flagship missile programs ran through this unit first. If you are tracking Dark_Eagle or Typhon schedule risk, the 1st MDTF’s exercise record is the operational ground truth against which program office claims should be checked.

The merger sets the template. Multi-Domain_Command_Europe preceded it by eleven months and Multi-Domain_Command_Japan is expected to follow. The 1st MDTF’s absorption is the clearest evidence that the Army decided a colonel-level headquarters cannot hold theater-level space and cyber authorities, and that the MDTF is a capability package rather than a permanent echelon.

Watch the designation. Public reporting does not establish that the 1st MDTF lineage was formally inactivated, only that it was integrated. Whether the numbered designation survives inside Multi-Domain_Command_Pacific affects how USARPAC’s three-MDTF allocation is counted.
