United States Army Space and Missile Defense Command
SMDC is the Army’s service component to both USSTRATCOM and USSPACECOM, and the Army’s proponent for space, missile defense, and high-altitude capabilities. It operates the ground-based midcourse missile defense crews that defend the United States against intercontinental ballistic missiles - a strategic mission the Army performs on behalf of the nation.

Mission
SMDC does three things:
- Operate. It provides trained and ready space and missile defense forces to the combatant commands, including the crews that operate the Ground-based Midcourse Defense system.
- Build. Through its Technical Center it conducts research, development, and technology work in directed energy, hypersonics defense, space-based sensing, and high-altitude platforms, and it operates the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site at Kwajalein Atoll.
- Advocate. It is the Army’s proponent for space and missile defense in JCIDS and the PPBE_Process, defining what the Army needs from space rather than building its own satellites.
On October 1, 2025 SMDC absorbed the 32nd_Army_Air_and_Missile_Defense_Command and 263rd_Army_Air_and_Missile_Defense_Command, substantially expanding its air and missile defense portfolio and giving it operational AMD formations alongside its strategic missile defense mission.

Why it matters
Huntsville is the address. SMDC sits at Redstone_Arsenal alongside AMC, AMCOM, the Missile_Defense_Agency, and Army_Contracting_Command. For missile defense and space, Huntsville is where the requirement, the acquisition, and the contracting authority are all colocated.
The Army’s space demand is user-side, not satellite-side. The US_Space_Force builds and operates satellites. The Army buys terminals, receivers, tactical ground stations, resilient PNT in GPS-denied conditions, commercial satellite communications services, and the analytics that turn overhead data into targeting. SMDC writes those requirements.
Missile defense money is large and durable. GMD, Patriot, THAAD, LTAMDS, IBCS, and Counter_UAS interceptors are among the Army’s biggest procurement lines, and the operational advocate for most of them sits here or in the AMD commands SMDC just absorbed. Golden Dome-class homeland defense architecture work runs through this command’s requirement space.
High altitude is an open frontier. Stratospheric balloons, HAPS, and high-altitude ISR are an SMDC-championed area where non-traditional companies have found entry points.
Kwajalein is a test asset. Companies needing long-range flight test, radar signature, or reentry instrumentation eventually deal with the Reagan Test Site.
