Maneuver Warfare
A warfighting philosophy that seeks to shatter the enemy’s cohesion through a variety of rapid, focused, and unexpected actions which create a turbulent and rapidly deteriorating situation with which the enemy cannot cope.
Foundation: MCDP 1 Warfighting
The USMC’s capstone doctrinal publication. Codifies maneuver warfare as the Marine Corps’ warfighting philosophy.
Core Tenets
- Speed — Tempo of operations faster than enemy can react
- Surprise — Strike where and when enemy doesn’t expect
- Focus — Concentrate effects at decisive point
- Decentralization — Mission-type orders (Auftragstaktik)
- Combined Arms — Integrate all arms for synergistic effect
Mission Command (Auftragstaktik)
Commander states intent and desired end state. Subordinates exercise initiative to achieve it. Requires:
- Mutual trust
- Shared understanding of the situation
- Commander’s intent at every level
- Willingness to accept risk
Directly influences SOF operational methodology and SOCOM_Training_Pipeline.
Surfaces and Gaps
Avoid surfaces (enemy strengths); exploit gaps (enemy weaknesses). Borrowed from Sun Tzu Art of War and refined through German infiltration tactics of WWI.
