Mission
USARSOUTH provided Army forces to USSOUTHCOM and ran the Army’s engagement with partner land forces across 31 countries in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Its mission was overwhelmingly security cooperation rather than combat: partner-nation training, humanitarian assistance and disaster response, counter-transnational-criminal-organization support, and multinational exercises such as Tradewinds and Southern Vanguard.
It was a small headquarters with a very large geographic remit, executing through rotational forces, National Guard State Partnership Program relationships, and contracted support rather than assigned combat formations.
Structure at Inactivation
- Army_Field_Support_Battalion-South and theater sustainment elements
- Joint_Task_Force-Bravo Army elements (Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras)
- Security Force Assistance Brigade rotational elements from the Security_Force_Assistance_Command
- Signal, medical, and engineer detachments supporting theater engagement
All were realigned to USAWHC as it reached initial operational capability in February 2026.
Why it matters
The USARSOUTH mission did not disappear; it moved into a four-star headquarters with far more force-provider weight. That matters commercially because the Western Hemisphere counter-narcotics, border, and maritime-domain-awareness missions now compete for resources inside the same staff that generates the Army’s warfighting readiness, and can pull on it.
Persistent markets from this mission set:
- ISR and maritime domain awareness - wide-area surveillance, aerostats, small UAS, and full-motion-video exploitation for detection and monitoring missions
- Foreign military sales and Excess Defense Articles to Latin American partners, executed through USASAC
- Humanitarian assistance and disaster response logistics - expeditionary medical, water purification, engineering, and airlift-adjacent support
- Language, cultural, and training services - a durable small-business and 8(a) contracting niche
- USACE partner-nation construction under humanitarian and civic assistance authorities
Anyone tracking Latin America work should now watch USAWHC and USSOUTHCOM rather than USARSOUTH.
