United States Army Military District of Washington
MDW is the Army’s headquarters for the National Capital Region. It does two unrelated things well: it executes the nation’s official ceremonies - state funerals, inaugurations, arrival honors, Arlington honors - and it is the Army’s contribution to defending Washington, DC. It is small, visible, and politically proximate in a way no other Army command is.

Mission
MDW conducts operations that support the nation’s capital: homeland defense, defense support of civil authorities in the National Capital Region, and official ceremonies and special events. It provides the Army component to Joint_Task_Force-National_Capital_Region, and it is the Army’s executive agent for state funerals and presidential inaugurations.
Its garrison responsibilities cover Fort_McNair, Fort_Myer / Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, and Davison Army Airfield at Fort_Belvoir.

Why it matters
MDW is not a materiel buyer at scale, and it should not be confused with one. Its commercial relevance is narrower and specific.
- National Capital Region security and continuity. Physical security, access control, counter-drone protection of restricted airspace over Washington, chemical and biological detection, and secure communications for continuity-of-government missions. Counter_UAS over the NCR is a distinctive and recurring requirement set that MDW shares with ARNORTH and interagency partners.
- Executive and VIP aviation. The Army_Aviation_Brigade operates the Army’s executive lift fleet, with associated maintenance, avionics, and modification work.
- Ceremonial and installation services. Uniform items, equine support for the caisson platoon, grounds and facilities services, and event logistics for inaugurations and state funerals.
- Proximity as an asset. MDW’s leadership sits inside the same geography as ASAALT, the Joint_Staff, and Congress. It is a useful barometer for how Army equities in the NCR are being handled, and its events are where senior Army leadership is physically accessible.
