Next-Generation Combat Vehicle (NGCV)
NGCV was the Army’s second modernization priority and the one the Army_Transformation_Initiative cut hardest. Two of its five signature programs, the Robotic Combat Vehicle and the M10 Booker, were terminated in May 2025, and Stryker production ended. What survives is a two-platform bet: the M1E3 Abrams and the XM30 Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle, both scheduled to reach troops for operational testing in 2026.

Mission
Replace or fundamentally rework the Cold War armored fleet: the M1 Abrams, the M2 Bradley, and the M113 family. The design pressures driving the portfolio are weight (bridges, strategic lift, and off-road mobility), power generation for sensors and electronic warfare, protection against top-attack munitions and loitering drones, and reduced crew size through automation.

Why it matters
The portfolio narrowed to two competitions, and both resolve inside two years. With RCV and the M10 gone and Stryker production ended, the Army’s ground combat vehicle new-build demand is concentrated in M1E3 and XM30. The XM30 production decision, reported as targeted for FY2027 with a value exceeding $1 billion, is the single largest ground vehicle award on the horizon.
The cancellation logic is now the design logic. The RCV termination was not a rejection of ground autonomy. It was a rejection of buying autonomy as a purpose-built vehicle program. The stated alternative, adding autonomy to vehicles the Army already owns via software, moves the opportunity from vehicle primes to autonomy software, sensors, drive-by-wire kits, and integration. Subsystems are the reliable business. Both surviving platforms are built around hybrid-electric power, active protection, open electronic architectures, and crew-reduction automation. That is a components and software market underneath two vehicle integrators, and it is less exposed to a single production decision than the platform itself.
Divestiture is a market. Ending Stryker production, ceasing M10 procurement, and the broader ATI fleet reductions create depot workload, disposition, and foreign military sales activity through AMC and the organic industrial base.
Test events are the gate. The fall 2026 Fort Hood fielding and the subsequent National Training Center rotation are where both platforms are judged in a formation. Under the post-ATI pattern, experimentation results move faster into program decisions than they did before.
